What Is a NIE Number?

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is a unique personal identification number assigned by the Spanish National Police to every foreigner who has economic, professional, or social ties to Spain.

It follows the format: letter (X, Y or Z) + 7 digits + control letter — for example, X-1234567-Z.

Your NIE number is permanent and does not expire. Once assigned, it follows you for life — even if you change your passport, nationality, or address. The paper certificate confirming your NIE has a 3-month validity for notarial use, but the number itself is yours forever.

The NIE is not a residency permit. Having a NIE does not mean you are a Spanish resident. It simply identifies you in the Spanish administrative and tax system.

What Do You Need a NIE For?

You will need your NIE for virtually every significant transaction in Spain, including:

If you are buying a property in Lanzarote from abroad, getting your NIE should be the very first step — before signing any reservation contract or paying any deposit.

EU Citizens vs. Non-EU Citizens: Different Routes

The NIE process differs depending on your nationality.

EU Citizens (German, Dutch, Irish, French, etc.)

EU citizens apply using Form EX-18 and the procedure is called Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión. If you plan to stay in Spain for more than 3 months, you are also required to register on the Registro Central de Extranjeros (Central Foreigners Register) within that period. This registration doubles as both your NIE and your residency certificate.

Non-EU Citizens (British post-Brexit, American, Canadian, Australian, etc.)

Post-Brexit, British nationals are treated as non-EU citizens for all Spanish administrative purposes. Non-EU nationals apply using Form EX-15 and, if applying for residency, will receive a TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) — a biometric plastic residence card that includes the NIE number.

If you only need the NIE for a property purchase or financial transaction (without seeking residency), you can apply for a standalone NIE using EX-15.

Three Ways to Get Your NIE in Lanzarote

The most straightforward route if you are already in Lanzarote or can travel to the island. The NIE is typically issued on the same day or within 1–3 working days of your appointment.

Step 1: Book your Cita Previa (appointment)

Appointments must be booked online through the official Spanish government portal: sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es

Tip on availability: Appointment slots are released in batches, typically on Monday mornings at 8:00 AM. Log in right at that time and refresh the page frequently. Late-cancelled slots can also appear overnight. If slots are unavailable, check back daily — patience and persistence pay off. Lanzarote's police station in Arrecife is typically less congested than stations in mainland cities.

Step 2: Pay the NIE fee (Tasa 790 Código 012)

The fee for a NIE in 2026 is approximately €12.

Step 3: Prepare your documents

For non-EU citizens (EX-15 route):

For EU citizens (EX-18 route):

Critical form tip: The EX-15 and EX-18 forms must be completed in Spanish. Under "nombre" enter your first name; under "apellidos" enter your surname(s). Name and surname must match your passport exactly — any discrepancy can result in rejection. Write in CAPITAL LETTERS throughout.

Step 4: Attend your appointment

Arrive at the National Police Station (Comisaría de Policía Nacional) in Arrecife on time. Present your documents at the designated counter. The officer will check your paperwork and either issue the NIE on the spot or give you a collection date.

Address: Comisaría de Policía Nacional de Arrecife, Lanzarote (check current address on the official police website as offices occasionally relocate).

Option 2: Through the Spanish Consulate in Your Home Country

This option is suitable if you want to obtain your NIE before travelling to Spain — common for property buyers who want everything in order before flying out to sign.

Process:

Processing time: 3–10 weeks depending on the consulate. Note that some consulates (particularly London) have high demand and longer waiting times.

Important: A NIE obtained through a consulate is often issued as a temporary certificate valid for 3 months. The number itself is permanent — once you arrive in Spain, you can obtain a permanent certificate with the same number at any point.

If you cannot travel to Spain and cannot get a consulate appointment in time, a Spanish lawyer or registered representative can obtain the NIE on your behalf using a power of attorney (poder notarial).

Requirements:

This is the most convenient option for property buyers who are managing the purchase remotely. The power of attorney used for the NIE can typically cover the property purchase signing as well — both transactions handled by the same representative.

After You Get Your NIE: Activating It for Tax Use

There is one additional step that many people miss.

Since 2019, the Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT) requires foreigners to activate their NIE as a NIF (Número de Identificación Fiscal) before it can be used for tax purposes. This is done at the local Delegación de Hacienda (Tax Office) and requires a separate appointment.

If your bank or notary tells you your NIE is "not active" or "not in the system," this activation step is almost certainly the issue.

At Accounting Spain, we handle NIE activation as part of our onboarding process for all new clients — so you never run into this problem.

Common Mistakes That Lead to Rejection

The NIE application is straightforward when done correctly, but small errors cause delays or outright rejection. The most common ones:

1. Incorrect or missing justification document The most frequent reason for rejection. You must demonstrate a concrete reason for needing the NIE. A vague explanation is not enough — bring a signed preliminary property contract, a letter from your bank or estate agent, or an employment contract.

2. Forms completed in English or with errors EX-15 and EX-18 must be in Spanish. Fields must match your passport exactly. Handwritten forms should be in capital letters.

3. Unpaid or incorrectly completed Modelo 790 The fee must be paid at a bank branch with the Modelo 790 Código 012. Do not attempt to pay online or by card. The bank must stamp the receipt.

4. Expired passport Your passport must be valid at the time of application. If it is close to expiry, renew it before applying.

5. Missing copies You need originals and photocopies of all documents. Many applicants bring originals but forget the photocopies.

6. Arriving late to your appointment Spanish police stations are strict about appointment times. Arriving even a few minutes late may mean losing your slot.

How Long Does It Take?

MethodProcessing Time
In person in LanzaroteIssued same day or 1–3 working days
Through Spanish consulate abroad3–10 weeks
Via power of attorney in Spain1–2 weeks (once representative has PoA)

The main bottleneck is almost never the processing itself — by law the decision must be made within 5 business days of submission. The real delay is getting the appointment, which can take 1–4 weeks depending on availability in Las Palmas province.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy property in Lanzarote without a NIE?
No. The notary will not process the escritura (title deed) without a valid NIE for all buyers. If you are buying jointly, every buyer needs their own individual NIE.
Does my NIE expire?
The NIE number itself never expires. The paper certificate issued when you collect it may have a 3-month validity for notarial purposes — you can always obtain a fresh certificate with the same number.
Can I apply for a NIE online?
As of 2026, there is no fully online process to obtain a NIE for the first time. You must appear in person (or send a legal representative with a power of attorney) at a police station or consulate.
I need my NIE urgently for a property completion — what are my options?
Contact us. In many cases we can arrange an expedited NIE through a power of attorney in Spain, or assist with an urgent consulate appointment. Do not risk your property purchase by leaving this to the last minute.
Do I need a NIE even if I'm not moving to Spain permanently?
Yes, if you are buying property, opening a bank account, or conducting any financial transaction in Spain. You do not need to be a resident to have a NIE.
